Location

Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta), the capital city of West Bengal, is located in the eastern region on the map of India. The city, lies on the eastern bank of the river Hooghly, in the north-south direction. It is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a strip of green land of the Sunderbans.

History



It is believed that Job Charnock, an administrator with the British East India Company, that arrived in 1690, marked the foundation of Calcutta (now Kolkata). The Fort William constructed by the British in 1699, made Kolkata its headquarters and by 1772 , Kolkata became the capital of British India. The beginning of the 19th century dawned in a new phase where Kolkata was divided into two sections-The White Town of the British and The Black Town of the natives. Distinctions between black and white became all the more 
prominent and tortures on the poor were rampant. The British and Indian culture gradually merged into the emergence of the bureaucrats, known as the Babus, who generally belonged to the upper-caste Hindu communities. Soon, however, Kolkata became the center ground of the Freedom Movement, that gave birth to many a brave martyrs such as the famous trio, Subhas Chandra Bose, Binoy, Badol, Dinesh, and Khudiram Bose and many others.
Attraction

Kolkata, the city of joy, has an inexorable influx of tourists and visitors from everywhere, throughout the year. It has an unparallel charm in its beauty of the various monuments and cultural and social heritage. The city holds the most beautiful Victoria Memorial Hall, built in memory of the British queen Victoria. It has the historical Fort William, that used to be the shelter for the British troops. The world-famous Howrah Bridge connecting Kolkata with neighboring Howrah district, over the river Hooghly is a sight to remember always.
Along with the traditional exuberance, the city upholds its rich culture in the form of the Academy of Fine Arts and Nandan, where the fortes of world's acclaimed artistes are displayed and appreciated. The enriched cultural heritage of the city can be fathomed in the National Award-winning films, documentaries and theatres. High end shopping malls, multiplexes, underground metro railway, five-star accommodation co exist with the world’s largest Book Fair. This ever-growing, maximum city is the melting pot of numerous cultures and religions. It’s a world within a city.

Another alluring incentive of the city is its multi-cuisine diet, especially, the traditional Bengali food, such as rice and fish-curry and of course the mouth-watering Rosogollas. The city is brimmed with well-served restaurants and attractive food joints.



Special Events




The city celebrates the Hindu festival, Durga Puja luxuriously over a period of about ten days. The festival occurring mostly during October, adorns up the city in glittering and sparkling brightness. It is, however, successfully followed by the Lakshmi Puja and the Kali Puja with equal extravagance.

Sports constitute a significant role in the culture and tradition of the city. Football is the most acclaimed sport in the city, with 
an large fan following for the East Bengal and the Mohun Bagan club teams. Apart from Football, the city also encourages Cricket and various other sports. It possesses the Eden Gardens and Netaji Indoor Stadium.

The city has a well-organized transport system, both roadways and railways. Two main railway stations are the Howrah Station and the Sealdah Station. There is another newly launched station named Kolkata Terminal. The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum administers both domestic and international flights.
